Chelsea Update & Awards!

Monday marks one month since Chelsea’s FHO surgery. Though we have a long way to go until she recovers, she is continuing to progress and get stronger each day.

Hello! I'm getting better but it still hurts sometimes!

In the past week, Chelsea has been picking up her leg at times, usually when she’s in the backyard. At this stage in her recovery, the bone mass in her leg and hip socket are fusing together and that can be painful. We have to continuously encourage her, “use your leg, Chelsea” until she puts it down. It’s imperative she put weight on and use her leg so her muscles can also fuse around her leg/hip socket as well as strengthen in her leg.

It is sometimes challenging to get a puppy to use her leg so we use a leash. If she is limping, I’ll immediately put her on a leash and walk her slowly, at a nice pace (inside or outside). I command her, “use your leg” so she associates it and we walk for 10 minutes. Once I take the leash off, she’s usually back to using all four.

Walking together, slowly and at a consistent pace.

I am a good walker on my leash!

In addition to this training modification, we’ve been taking her on walks 2-3 times a day, making her swim (she does not like this– we’ll have to do a post on this :)), massaging her leg every night and doing daily exercises and stretches. She goes in Scarlett’s big crate at night and is separated from the others by the doggy gate during the day. It is a lot of work but we are committed to getting her leg back to the best condition possible Our veterinarian thinks she’ll regain up to 95% use with continued therapy/rehab. Her complete recovery will take approximately    4 – 6 more months.

We were recently nominated for awards by Laurie Bartolo Photography and Collies of the Meadow. Thank you so much!

Chelsea is the recent recipient of two lovely awards from Laurie Bartolo Photography. Thank you, Laurie, for these wonderful awards and for your kind words and many prayers for Chelsea’s recovery. We are honored to receive these awards from a blog we enjoy so much and we are so thankful for the support! Make sure you check out Laurie Bartolo Photography for photos of doggies and heartfelt posts about Laurie’s amazing work.

We were also awarded the Lovely Blog Award by Collies of the Meadow, another one of our favorite dog blogs!! This blog features Chuck and his beautiful crew of smart, fun-loving Collies. Recently, pack leader, Trevor, had a stroke and is currently recovering. We continue to send them prayers and support and we do hope Trevor keeps improving! Thank you Chuck and the Collies for this wonderful award- we are so honored! Stop on by Collies of the Meadow and check in with this big Collie bunch 🙂

Since these awards are meant to be shared, we would like to pass both awards along to two great blogs we enjoy reading 🙂

Cupcake Speaks– Cupcake the rescue Jack Russel mix stars in this fun blog. Her mommy is a Children’s Writer and has even penned a book about Cupcake, the rescue-pup-turned-service-dog. Hop on over and see what Cupcake is up to!

Training a Service Dog– This blog is about the trials and tribulations of training cute pup, Bambi to be a service dog as an aid to her owner. This blog highlights the journey these two are taking together and always has interesting information, dotted with photos of the adorable, Bambi. Don’t miss this blog!

We also have one more award that we will share tomorrow! We are excited to accept this award but we need to think up 7 things you guys may not know about us 😉
