Big Dogs

How big do you think the heaviest dog in the world weighed? You may be surprised at the number, a Guinness Book Record held by Zorba, a massive tan English Mastiff. Though she sadly passed away in 2008, Zorba held and still holds the record for the world’s largest pup. Click here to see some amazing pictures of this gentle giant. Still wondering about her weight? 343 pounds! Let me assure you that was no typo, Zorba weighed 343 pounds!

English Mastiffs are the largest dogs in the world and can weigh over 200 pounds. Their average size is 120-230 pounds (click here to see my source).

Other large dog breeds include Burmese Mountain Dogs, a favorite breed in Telluride, CO, as well as Saint Bernards, Newfoundlands and Great Danes.

How big was the biggest pup you ever had? The biggest I ever had was Jenny, a 110-pound Bouvier des Flanders. She was a beautiful gentle giant who was often mistaken for a small black bear. Here’s a photo of me, Jenny and Stanley, our Standard Schnauzer, from back in the day 🙂

  1. Jenny::)) We loved her so much that when she needed three hip replacements, we gladly did so. When we moved to Florida, we got a call from our neighbor to tell us to stay inside while he got his gun to take care of the black bear in the yard. We all yelled, JENNY where are you? Then we all went outside quickly and retrieved her. We had just moved in and no one had seen our beloved girl.
She loved Deanna and Stan the Man our 60 pound Standard Schnauzer. Stan the Man swam all day long, diving head first into the pool to retrieve his toy at the bottom. That was when he wasn’t running full tilt into the pool, landing on his raft and surfing across the pool to get out on the other side in order do it all again.

  2. When I was a child we had a great dane. He was very friendly and tolerant of me. He was taller than our kitchen table!

  3. Wow, 343 pounds! Zorba was definitely not a lap dog! 🙂

  4. I don’t think I’d want the food bill for Zorba. Bongo is the biggest dog I’ve ever had and he’s only about 65 pounds.

What an adorable picture! We have never had a dog over 70 pounds. Hugs and nose kisses

  6. Jennifer, that is so cool! I love big dogs even though we have two peanuts and Scarlett at the moment. We’ll see how big Chelsea the German Shepherd mix gets but I’m guessing she’ll be between Harley and Scarlett.

Bassa, Zorba was definitely a giant! So pretty, too 🙂

Bongo, us either! We have about 80 pounds of dog (combining the 3) and it seems we buy food every other week despite buying in bulk.

Thanks Chancy, Mumsy and Crew! My parents always had big dogs but Scarlett is the biggest my boyfriend and I have had. She was 50 lbs. a few months ago and we’re guessing she may be around 60’s amazing how she keeps growing!

  7. The biggest dog I’ve lived with was Kylemore, my 150 pound Irish wolfhound. Sadly, we lost him to osteosacroma when he was only five-and-a-half. How I live with a Scottish deerhound. Although very tall (easily sniffs food on kitchen counter) she only weighs 82 pounds.

  8. We also had an irish wolfhound named kylemore! She passed away from “bloat” last year, but before her illness weighed @ 170lbs. She was the kindest, most gentle, caring dog that I’ve ever encountered. Her death was shockingly heartbreaking. I will never own another large dog again because of the difficulty of transporting a sick animal.
